Your beauty routine might be the last thing on your mind while you’re at a festival but here are the festival beauty essentials that you need to know about.
We are currently right slap bang in the middle of festival season which, might I say, is by far the best season that’s not actually a season.
It is the season of experimenting; whether that be wearing clothes that you would never imagine wearing outside of the house on a normal weekend, or testing out a new bold neon pink winged eyeliner look.
Festival season allows you to think a little further outside of the box.
Put this all together with spending long weekends with friends, listening to your favourite bands live, and drinking slightly more than we probably should be, there’s nothing about a festival to complain about.
Well, almost. One of the things that you will frequently find me moaning about during the weekend is my inability to perform my sacred beauty routine in its entirety.
After years of perfecting my beauty routine, it pains me to see it all go to waste over a weekend.
So in preparation for my next festival, which is quickly approaching, here are my tips on how to get the most out of your beauty routine while still embracing the things that make festivals what they are.
Makeup removal
You can be as wild and creative as you want when it comes to festival makeup, but the issues come when you actually come to taking it off.
Regardless of the fact that you are in the middle of a field without water to complete your usual double cleanse, you’re also going to be getting back to your tent very late and, let’s be real, noone wants to deal with removing a face of glitter when you are tired and the hangover is starting to kick in.
Prepare yourself, because this is probably going to be the only time that I will recommend facial wipes.
They aren’t the best for your skin at all but they are better than the alternative of not taking off your makeup at all, just make sure to bring some kind of serum to put on after so at least your skin doesn’t completely hate you.
Not only are facial wipes not very kind to your skin, they are also notoriously bad for the environment; they are one of the main materials that can be found clogging up our sewers, and are most commonly made out of materials that can take up to 100 years to biodegrade.
Thankfully now some brands are taking action on these negative consequences and producing wipes that are made using recycled plant materials that break up far easier than normal wipes, like these Simple ones.
Alternatively, you can do one better and ditch the facial wipes altogether. Instead get a travel-sized bottle of micellar water and stock up on some reusable cotton pads to last you through the weekend, which you can then throw in the wash when you get home.
The Makeup
Now for the more exciting and glamorous part, the makeup itself. Knowing what makeup to wear can be a bit of a minefield, you have to consider the fact that you are going to be wearing it for a very long time and that you’ll probably be sweating a lot throughout the day.
So you’re going to need something that looks super cool but that will also stand the test of time.
Before you can get into all of the fun and crazy makeup looks, some key its to think of.
SPF
First = suncream.
This is, of course, important all year round, but even more so when you are standing outside all day at a festival.
I like this La Roche Posay SPF as it is non-greasy and extremely light which makes it perfect underneath makeup.
On the same line, I like to wear a lighter foundation because I know that it will probably fade/sweat off during the day so want something that’s not too heavy, the Revolution Pro Foundation Drops are perfect for this.
In terms of the rest of my makeup, I keep it pretty similar to my usual routine, but I then like to jazz it up with some bright colours on the eyes and lips.
To get it out of the way, I have kind of mixed feelings about wearing glitter at festivals, it can look cool when done right but it’s also an absolute pain to remove and gets absolutely everywhere.
If you are planning on wearing it this festival season, do the planet a favour and make sure it’s the biodegradable kind.
As far as specific products go, NYX have some great festival-appropriate eyeliners and eyeshadows. I picked up a few of their Off Tropic Pro Liners, the shade range is amazing and the colour payoff is incredible.
