Today I’m going to be sharing some of my favourite products for thin/fine hair that will instantly volumize your hair and make it look much thicker.
I feel like I’ve written pretty extensively about the issues I’ve had with styling my fine, straight hair. For years I got so fed up with it looking limp and lifeless that I completely gave up on it and rarely used any products on it (apart from shampoo and conditioner).
Now, it’s a whole other story.
I now have a fully-formed hairstyling routine that’s full of products that give my hair natural volume and bounce. My hair is now looking healthier and fuller than ever.
One of the most important products that I’ve discovered that has helped to add volume to my flat hair is thickening sprays.
A few spritzes of these products when I get out of the shower and you’d never know that my hair is naturally completely flat.
Here are my top tips on how to use thickening sprays for fine hair and all of my tried and tested products that will give life to limp locks.
How to use thickening sprays
Thickening sprays are best used as the first step of your hair routine, straight out of the shower.
You don’t want your hair to be completely wet when you use them, but you also don’t want it to be too dry — try to find the sweet mid-way spot.
You want to focus the product at the roots of your hair where it can often look the flattest.
I’ll start to lift up fairly large sections of my hair and spray the product right at the root and then repeat this process until all of the section around the top of my head has had product applied.
I’d say I use around 8-10 spritzes of product, but depending on how much hair you have you may use more, or less.
After this you just need to take your fingers and rub the product in.
You can either leave your hair to air-dry (which I normally do) or you can use a blow-dryer.
If you use a blow-dryer you’ll be able to get more volume into your hair, especially if you flip your hair upside-down.
My favourite thickening sprays for fine hair
Toni & Guy Glamour 3D Volumiser
If you’re in need of some serious volume on a budget, the Toni & Guy Glamour 3D Volumiser is the best product you’ll find.
This is the product I used to use on nights out (remember those?!) when I wanted a super strong hold that wouldn’t budge.
When you spray this in your hair it feels like hairspray, it will make your hair a little hard to the touch but not noticeably so.
But wow does this keep your hair volumised all day/night long.
You only need to put a few sprays of this into your hair, to avoid it looking like your hair is glued in place. But the smallest amount makes such a difference.
This is the product I’d be reaching for when I have a serious flat hair emergency.
Plus it’s the most affordable product I have to share today, coming it at under £9!
Kristin Ess Thickening Spray
Kristin Ess is my favourite haircare range of the moment, they sit at a price point where they are in the ‘affordable’ category but their products still feel super luxurious.
I’ve adored all of the products that I’ve tried from them so far. Although their products aren’t specifically targeted towards people with fine hair, I’ve found that they’re lightweight enough that they don’t weigh my hair down or feel too thick.
Their Thickening Spray is no exception to my love for this brand, that’s for sure.
This fine spray feels like virtually nothing in your hair and gives you a naturally voluminous look.
With some other thickening sprays, you can feel the product in your hair, but with this product, it feels like nothing. This means that it doesn’t give you the extreme volume you might get with some of the other products I’ve mentioned, but I love the effortless and natural lift it gives my hair.
Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray
Bumble and Bumble do a great range of volumising products, from shampoos to thickening treatments that I’d recommend to anyone with fine hair. The shampoo in particular really helped my hair and provides the base for the rest of your volumising hair products.
The thickening spray is one of the stand-outs of the range for me. A few sprays and my hair is full of body while looking shiny and healthy at the same time.
This is quite similar to the Kristin Ess spray, it really works at providing volume but your hair still looks natural and bouncy – it doesn’t feel like it’s completely coated in product.
NatureLab. Tokyo Perfect Volume Texture Mist
We’re rounding off this post with another affordable favourite from Nature Labs Tokyo.
This is a brand you can find on Cult Beauty that I don’t really hear too much about, but I really enjoy their products.
They do 2 different hair mists, one for shine and one for volume. I love both, but the volume texture mist is perfect for fine hair.
This product has a pretty strong hold, it doesn’t give your hair the soft-to-the-touch feeling so it can be easy to go overboard.
It’s also good for scrunching dry hair if you want more texture and wave if your hair is naturally straight like mine.
What thickening sprays do you use?
