Do hydrocolloid patches really work?
I’m taking you through some of the best acne pimple patches that will get rid of spots overnight.
As someone with acne-prone skin, I feel like I’ve tried every kind of spot treatment there is on the market but I always find that most products just don’t do what I want them to… actually get rid of spots.
The best type of product that I’ve found that genuinely reduces the appearance of spots and blemishes within a couple of hours is pimple patches, also known as hydrocolloid patches.
Today I’m going to be sharing some of the most popular acne pimple patches that promise to banish blemishes and give you clear skin. All of the ones that I’ll be talking about today all have their unique selling points, so have a read-through and see which pimple patch you think will work the best for your blemishes.
How do hydrocolloid patches work?
You’ll often see the word ‘hydrocolloid‘ on many of the pimple patches you buy, this is the ingredient that pimple patches are made of.
They’re a sticky material that’s used in hospitals when treating wounds. They work by absorbing fluid and keeping the area around a wound/pimple moist which helps it to heal quicker.
With pimple patches, hydrocolloid is great because it absorbs all of the impurities from the pimple which is, obviously what you want – but the added benefit is that it also creates a layer over the pimple that stops any further dirt or bacteria from getting and aggravating the blemish (and if you’re like me, it will also stop you from giving in to the temptation to pop the spot).
Most patches say to leave it on for a while, we’re talking 5+ hours or even overnight to get the full effect. After an hour or so you’ll start to see the colour of the pimple patch changing – this is where all of the gunk from your pimple has been drawn out (gross, I know!).
The top-rated acne pimple patches
Starface Hydro-Stars / £11.99
The one that will go viral
Starting off with the one that will probably get you the most attention on social media, the cutest star pimple patches from Starface.
These are a great example of a product that is simple and effective. Some of the patches I’ll be talking about contain extra ingredients, which work great for the skin but if you want to strip it back to the only-necessary – these are great.
They’re 100% hydrocolloid so they will be able to do all of the things that I spoke about above – making your pimples appear less red, and less inflamed overnight while drawing out all of that nasty pimple juice.
Probably the thing that makes them a crowd-favourite is the fact they aren’t your standard clear patch – they look so cute once you put them on!
COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch / £3
The one that’s my holy grail
These are all the most-popular pimple patches, but if you want to know which ones are my favourite – it’s these from COSRX.
I’ve been through multiple packs of these pimple patches as they seriously never fail me. As soon as a pimple starts getting a white head I pop one of these on overnight and by the next morning the pimple is pretty much gone.
I’ve also noticed since using these, they really prevent the spots from scarring which is a major thing for me as acne scarring is my biggest skin issue.
The price varies quite a bit depending on where you purchase the patches from – to get the cheapest £3 price it’s best to purchase from YesStyle or StyleVana!
Beauty Bay Dot-a-Spot Blemish Stickers / £5.95
The one that gives you serious value for money
If you get more than the occasional blemish and you want to really stock up on a lot of pimple patches, how does 72 stickers for under £6 sound? Pretty good right?
These are standard hydrocolloid patches with no fancy ingredients in them. They may be simple, but they get the job done – and to get so many in the packet at an affordable price is really great value for money.
Although they don’t have a sophisticated ingredients list that would make them great for early-stage pimples, they will still effectively absorb all of the impurities from blemishes with a white head – so if this is what you need them for, you’re onto a winner.
ZitSticka KILLA Spot Clarifying Patch Kit / £26.99
The one that goes above and beyond
So in comparison to a lot of the pimple patches I’ve mentioned in this post, these are by far the most expensive – but boy are they worth the money that you pay.
The difference between these patches and the others is that this kit targets early-stage blemishes whereas the others can only really help once the blemish has started to get a white head.
These Killa pads use ZitSticka’s microdart technology that actually gets into epicentre of your pimple and floods it with ingredients that clears up the blemish before it starts to really show.
As soon as you notice a blemish, these are the stickers that you should reach for so that you can really nip it in the bud.
Revolution Skincare Pick-Me-Not Blemish Patches / £6
The one that contains Salicylic Acid
If you’ve got acne-prone skin you’ve probably heard all about salicylic acid – it’s a seriously incredible ingredient at banishing blemishes so combining this ingredient with all of the benefits of a pimple patch and we’re on to a winning product.
This is a great budget option as you pay £6 for 60 stickers so you know this is going to last you a while.
The added salicylic acid really makes this product stand out from your usual hydrocolloid patch as not only does it remove impurities, it also breaks up congestion in the pores and makes sure that your blemishes heal up super quickly.
Whenever I look this product is sold out, so if you see it online – grab it while you can because it’s super popular.
Dots For Spots / £5.99
The one that stays on, no matter what.
If you want a pimple patch that seriously won’t budge – whether that’s because you want to put makeup on over it, or you’re just fed up of pimple patches falling off overnight – this is the product you want to try.
The Dots for Spots patches are ultra-thin and really suction to your skin so they really don’t move at all. Because they’re so thin you can also easily put makeup on over the top as they’re pratically undetectable.
The only issue? They are a (tiny) bit painful to take off, so be careful not to rip it off too hard!
Mighty Patch / £12.74
The one that everyone loves – and has options
I couldn’t finish off this pimple patch post without one of the most popular pimple patches that I know lots of my friends on Instagram love so here’s my Mighty Patch review.
This product is a lot easier to get your hands on in the US, but you can still get it on Amazon if like me you live in the UK (albeit for a slightly higher price).
This is another pimple patch that is super simple and only contains hydrocolloid, which is great option especially if you have sensitive skin that doesn’t respond well to lots of harsh ingredients.
These perform just as well as everyone says they do – overnight I my spots are visibly smaller and less red, plus all of the gunk has been pulled out.
Out of all of the pimple patches, my favourites are the COSRX Acne Pimple Patches – they just work so well for my skin and never fail me.
If you’re willing to spend more money, the ZitSticka patches are really great and work wonders at getting rid of spots as soon as any sign of them appears.

I’m lucky in that I very rarely get spots, but I love the idea of a sticker delivering what I need, exactly where I need it, as some spot treatments dry out other parts of the skin x
